freeware“Free”, I believe it’s the most preferred word you would like to find to any search engines, such as free antivirus, free screensaver, free games, etc. But, there is a good question for that ‘free’ word, why is it free?. We must to know what makes it be free to download. There are 2 possibilities to answer that question.

  1. It’s free just because the software makers need to promote their product and website, so that, they will get a good feedback from the users about their products. Also it’s possible to get the traffic from the visitor of their web site; this is one of the best methods of SEO to boost the web’s traffic.
  2. This is not about promoting software neither web site even if they do that, but the most important thing is about to  spread a virus or spyware to anyone who has downloaded their free software. Most of them are not the original owner of that free software even some of them are the original software makers.

Well, looks like you will learn too much about to prevent the answering number 2. However you will not to worry about it, since we can mark off which was have the virus and not.  Here are the tips.

  1. Make sure the web site you want to download from is legitimate and credible, also has a good feedback from any forum related to the software. Furthermore check the contact information such as contact person, phone number and physical address. This is to prevent any unexpected problem caused the software.
  2. If you got the download link from the forum, check the referrer who gives that link’s information.  If you know the software name try to search it through search engine about the origin vendor of the software, so you can download directly to the vendor’s web site.
  3. If you want to download free antivirus or free anti-spyware, check the achievement and history of the vendor and products through any forum related to it. If you do not found any good feedback regarding the software, then do not download that software as they will plant more over spyware and virus to your computer.
  4. Check the extension of the files you want to download, I would prefer to download archive extension file like “.RAR” or “.ZIP” rather than execution file like “.EXE” or “.MSI” , unless the web site source is eligible to trust.
  5. Before download the free software, you need to decide to which folder and drive you want to store the file. I will recommend storing the file to the second drive of your computer to avoid any unexpected problem from the virus or malware.
  6. After downloading the free software, make sure to scan it with an antivirus.

I think it’s not hard too much to learn about this tips. Good luck to try!
