Well, let’s begin the tutorial of how to recover password from Windows XP/Vista. I have found many method on how to recover the password, but in my opinion, it’s not recover, i think it would be good to call that method as “Replace a password” since the Process is not to find out the real password but they change the password to a new password, and that’s not what we want.
Now i will use another method which will find out the real password. There is a free software like Ophcrack which is usefull to help us to crack the Windows Password efficiently. It’s supported for any platform of Operating System like Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS X. Ophcrack has 2 versions which where you can use it depend of the case.
1. Ophcrack All Platform which where you can choose this version depend on your OS Platform. You should to install it first before running the software.
2. Ophcrack Live CD, the software is in ISO format, it’s mean you have to burn it first to your blank CD, then you can run the software without any installation process. There are 2 options in this version, one for Win XP Platform and the other for Vista Platform.

In this tutorial, I will use Ophcrack Live CD to recover a password from Windows XP.
I assumed that you have an Ophcrack LiveCD burned into your CD already. Then we can start the instructon below:
1. Insert the CD to your CDROM drive.
2. Reboot your computer, and booting up with your CD.
3. You will see 3 options:
- Ophcrack Graphic Mode
- Ophcrack Graphic Vesa Mode
- Ophcrack Text Mode
I prefer to choose Ophcrack Graphic Mode. Then wait for the loading process.
4. After loading the modul, the system will try to search the path of the installation Windows in your Computer. Then when it was founded, the Ophcrack will automatically to find out the password itself.
Security password research and Ophcrack ability.
When i tried this Software, i have make password in my System using Alpha-numeric combination. And here are the results :
1. For 6 digits password length, Ophcrack need 3 – 4 minutes to crack the password.
2. For 7 – 12 digits, need 5 – 8 minutes
3. For 14 digits , Ophcrack unable to crack that password.
Prevention
To preventing any methods of the cracking password, you should protect your BIOS using a password and avoid booting Windows from CDROM.

There are a lot of Windows password revealers and crackers available, but I’ve found that Windows Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.:

You can use the ISO to burn a boot CD. Follow these instructions:
1. Download ISO file from http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com Windows Password Recovery Tool
2. Burn to a CD using a CD burning tool such as Nero or Roxio or MagicISO
3. Insert CD into drive and reboot.
4. You may have to select an option in the BIOS to get the computer to boot from the CD.
Booting up and clearing a password takes a minute or two works like a charm.
