comcast bandwidth speed
I am writing this as i have found many people still do not understand what’s a bandwidth and how to know it. I believe you have familiar with this word “Kilo Byte per second” (KBps) or “Kilo bit per second” (Kbps) or “Mega bit per second” (Mbps). What’s the different of them?. Well let’s say you have subscribed the 12Mbps internet plan to Comcast Internet Provider. The question is what the actually speed will you have from the 12Mbps internet plan is?. I will answer this question as simple as i can.
In theory 1 byte is equal with 8 bits, also “byte” word will use ‘B’ (capital letter) and “bit” word will use ‘b’ (not capital letter). It’s mean when you have 12Mbps (12 Mega bits per second) bandwidth, then you have actual speed as 12000Kbps : 8 bits = 1.5MBps (Mega Byte per second). With those actual speed, you can download a movie files from the internet only for 7 – 8 minutes. (usually the movie files size up to 700MB). However it’s just a theory on a paper. Since the Internet Provider like a Comcast doesn’t guarantee that the real bandwidth you will have is 12Mbps. They only said on their offer that the bandwidth is “up to 12Mbps”. It’s mean their bandwidth will depend on how many clients connected on their network. The more clients connected on their network, the more bandwidth will reduce. Normally the bandwidth will reduce up to 60% from the actual bandwidth. That’s mean you will have 60% bandwidth from 12Mbps which is equal to 900KBps (Kilo Byte per second). If you download a movie which has 700MB files size, then you will need 12 minutes to complete the download process. In other case the actual speed of your internet connection will be depend on traffic data or noise around your area. Usually it will takes 10% – 20% of your real bandwidth. So, it’s not a good bandwidth as in the advertising right?. But that’s the real fact of Internet Provider. I hope in the future the Internet Provider like a Comcast or Verizon or another will consider this in order to serve better for the bandwidth geeks like us.
